What Are Eye Cysts?

A conjunctival cyst is a small, clear, fluid-filled bubble on the white of the eye. Eyelid cysts are small lumps in or under the skin of the lid.

They can form after inflammation, injury or surgery, or from blocked glands. Most are harmless but they can feel irritating or look unsightly.

Small cysts and growths, including some naevi (moles), can be removed in a short procedure, and tissue can be sent for testing when needed.

Symptoms

Eye cysts and lumps can cause:

  • A visible bump

A clear bubble or small lump on the eye or lid.

  • Watery eye

    Irritation can trigger tearing.

  • Gritty feeling

    Discomfort when blinking.

  • Cosmetic concern

    The lump is noticeable.

  • Growth over time

    The cyst slowly gets bigger.

  • Change in a mole

A spot that changes colour or size needs checking.

When is Removal Needed?

Removal is recommended when a cyst causes discomfort, keeps growing, affects appearance or vision, or when a lump or mole changes and needs testing.

A changing spot on the eye should be checked. If a pigmented spot grows or changes colour, book an examination.

Removal may be advised when the lump

  • Causes irritation or discomfort
  • Is getting bigger
  • Affects your appearance
  • Changes in colour, shape or size
  • Interferes with blinking or vision
