What is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?

Meibomian glands are tiny oil glands along the edges of the eyelids. Their oil forms the top layer of the tear film and stops tears from drying out too fast.

In meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) the glands become blocked or produce thick oil. Tears evaporate quickly and the eyes become dry, red and irritated. It is one of the most common causes of dry eye.

Treatment starts with warm compresses and lid cleaning. When glands stay blocked, meibomian gland probing opens them directly to let the oil flow again.
