What Are These Conditions?

After cataract surgery, the thin capsule that holds the new lens can slowly become cloudy. This is called posterior capsule opacification, or “after-cataract”, and it can make vision blurry again months or years later.

Glaucoma is raised eye pressure that damages the optic nerve. Some types, such as narrow-angle glaucoma, can be treated or prevented with laser.

Both are treated with quick, painless lasers in the clinic: a YAG laser to clear the cloudy capsule, and laser procedures to help fluid drain and lower eye pressure.

Symptoms

You may need assessment if you notice:

  • Vision blurring again

Months or years after cataract surgery.

  • Glare from lights

Halos and dazzle, especially at night.

  • Glasses no longer help

Updating glasses does not sharpen vision.

  • Raised eye pressure

    Found at a routine check.

  • Loss of side vision

    A sign of glaucoma damage.

  • Painful red eye

    Sudden pain needs urgent care.

When is Treatment Needed?

YAG laser is recommended when capsule clouding affects your vision. Glaucoma laser is advised when eye pressure is high, or when the drainage angle is narrow and at risk of closing.

After-cataract is not the cataract coming back. It is a common, easily treated clouding of the capsule behind the new lens.

Laser treatment may help if you

  • Had cataract surgery and vision is blurring again
  • Have glare that affects daily life
  • Have raised eye pressure or glaucoma
  • Have narrow drainage angles
  • Want to reduce the number of glaucoma drops
